Local Businesses: Key to job creation in Southern Dutchess
Submitted by Janíce Weir, M.S.

According to White house statistics, small businesses create two (2) out of every three (3) new jobs and account for nearly half of America’s overall employment. The Muddy Cup Coffee House, on Main Street in Beacon, is no exception. With stores in 4 locations from Beacon to Schenectady, owner Jim Svetz, believes in hiring local workers and has already created over 20 jobs and counting, between all four stores. Not only does he give local people a working chance, but he trains and mentors them for future promotion opportunities as well.

According to Mari Porter, a mentee in the Greater Southern Dutchess Chamber of Commerce’s job mentoring program and newly hired Server at the Muddy Cup Coffee House, “Jim is a great employer to work for because he is a good role model and he cares.”

In his business, hiring local friendly faces actually helps his business grow as they have a connection to the community and helps to foster a sense of loyalty in the customers. Living close by also makes getting to work hassle free and benefits the community in that the dollars are spent, earned and recycled back into the Southern Dutchess economy.

This month, we would like to invite local businesses to partner with us in providing job opportunities for our program participants. The current pool of job seekers is looking for opportunities in Housekeeping/Hospitality, Waitressing, Construction, Manufacturing, Reception, Customer Service, Direct Care and Healthcare (CNA and LPN).

If you are a local employer and have a position available within your company, why not take advantage of the mentoring program’s job referral service. We can provide you with a pool of prescreened candidates and more importantly, it’s FREE. Please give our Job Mentor, Janíce Weir, a call at 845-296-0001 or email her at janicew@gsdcc.org for more details.
